Hooray for Hollywood!

Well, friends, it's been fun blogging with you for the Academy Awards season and I hope we'll get to do it again in a year's time when we celebrate the 80th Anniversary of Oscar! In the meantime, I'm never more than a mouse click away thanks for the magic of the internet and I'll be sure to keep up on all the Tinseltown news, schmooze and reviews. I hope you enjoyed this year's nominated films and performances. I met Mark Wahlberg over the weekend to discuss his latest film SHOOTER (highly entertaining but certainly not a future Oscar contender) and while I had some time with him, I let him know that I had correctly predicted the major winners in all of this year's categories...with the exception of Best Supporting Actor. While I had correctly gone against the Eddie Murphy trend, I was betting on Mark. I asked him if it was only PR spin/lip service or really true that it's "an honour just to be nominated." Not one to BS, he assured me that it is. He hadn't expected a nomination, nor had he ever expected to be so excited by one, but he admitted that it was very exciting to get that early morning phone call with the news that his work had been so recognized.

I asked Martin Landau where he keeps his gold statuette and he said it's on a special shelf alongside his numerous other accolades like The Golden Globe, the SAG Award and those from the New York, Los Angeles and Chicago Film Critics, Mary Pickford Award and Cable Ace. "At night I know they all talk to each other," he joked.

It's the magic of Oscar no film fan can ever escape. I remember back in 1986 turning down the chance to appear in the Andrew McCarthy/Kim Cattrall film MANNEQUIN because I would have had to be on location in Philadelphia the very day I was scheduled to move to Hollywood! The entire 5 day cross-country trip in my little car, I kept worrying that I may have blown my one big chance to be in a movie and, who knows, WIN AN OSCAR! Ha ha ha, I still laugh about that now and, if you've ever seen that unfortunate "comedy" you would laugh at that, too! It wasn't too long before I got to act in two other box office disasters, OFF BEAT and ISHTAR. But even when the movie is a turkey, somewhere in the back of your mind, there is always a little twinkle of Oscar gold!

Yes...that was the Oscar-winning Best Song from 1972's THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE, but it's also my anthem for today! Another Awards show for the history books and this year was especially fun as I got to blog along with you as it happened! Thanks for all your comments and participation. Keep it coming! We still have a lot to discuss in the week ahead...particularly as the post-party gossip starts trickling in he he he he. Hot topics of the night discussed at the Governor's Ball? Is perennial Playboy Hugh Hefner close to tying the knot? And have Howard K. Stern and Larry Birkhead reached a settlement regarding the paternity of Anna Nicole's daughter, Dannielynn?

See? Even on Awards night, everybody still loves to gossip!

I'm happy to finally peel off the tuxedo and get back into some comfy clothes now. Still can't get over that Suri Cruise...what a living doll! Just think...in twenty years time, she and Shiloh Jolie-Pitt could be the new stars of the red carpet!

I CALLED IT!

Well, I hate to say I told you so....but I told you so! As I called it on SUNRISE this morning, I predicted THE DEPARTED would take Best Picture and I'm happy to be right! While it might not have taken psychic abilities to predict Best Actor, Actress and Supporting Actress, I do feel kinda cocky that I predicted a Supporting Actor upset (albeit not with Arkin) and a DEPARTED sweep for Director and Picture.

Ellen's sign off was super speedy, but it could have more to dow ith the fact that it was nearly a four (!) hour show. I think they should just campaign to make it an entire weekend event! She did a great job, don't you think? I, for one, believe she should get the gig again next year and let's have some Oscar consistency! Bob Hope and Billy Crystal were there for us...isn't it Ellen's turn!?

Well, kids, that does it for me tonight. Im going to jump into the Benz and head out into the night and see what post-party buzz I can dig up for tomorrow. If nothing else, we'll have fun rehashing the Memorable Moment and Best/Worst Dressed. Thanks for hanging out with me online.

Your pal in Hollywood...Nelson xxx

These super talented fellas...I'm so glad UNITED 93 was recognized. But for the "Oscar to go to..." MARTIN SCORSES at long last! It's a great moment for this Hollywood icon. (OK, so does this mean THE DEPARTED is a shoe-in for Best Picture?!) He's had consistent grace and humour about his long status as Oscar's "Bridesmaid!" He is living, loving proof to "try, try again!" You'll notice they didn't hurry him off with orchestrations! Molto bene---Sambucca for everyone!

OMG TYPOS & BEST ACTOR!

Apologizing now for the typos...so excited I can't keep up or spell check! Here comes Reese Witherspoon...I almost missed her, she's gotten so skinny. I think I preferred her with a little more meat on her bones and fewer hair extensions. But, I'm holding out for her remake of BUNNY LAKE IS MISSING...the original starring my all time fave actress and gal pal, Carol Lynley. As for Best Actor...I've made no secret of my support for Leo DiCaprio in BLOOD DIAMOND, but there's not a bad apple in the bunch. I also thought Peter O'Toole's turn in VENUS was an incredible tour de force. Forest Whitaker is such a modest gentleman playing such a rutheless, cold blood tyrant...it's impossible not to cheer for him. Hooray, Forest! I wish he'd had more than the requisite 45 seconds to make his acceptance speech. Don't you think he deserves a wee bit more time to acknowledge the folks he credits for bringing him to this moment?! He still was able to do it! That must be his TV training! We all know how to meet a deadline!

It's been all-Helen, all the time. So now we can put it to rest for another year. The irony is, will you still be able to remember who won at this time NEXT year!?? All great talents...great women...great personalities. But the winner was, no surprise, Dame Mirren. I've never met her, but I've seen her out and about in Beverly Hills and she's always smiling and serene-looking. Of course, this leaves us to wonder: could THE QUEEN possibly pull off a Best Picture win?? Interestingly, the real QEII (allegedly) refuses to see the film. Probably a smart decision. Would you want to see yourself portrayed on film? And if so, who would you want to play you!? I'd've said Robert Downey Jr could have played me until I saw him onstage tonight. Now I want someone a little better groomed. Hmmm, what about Greg Kinnear as Nelson Aspen?

I love Jodie Foster...so much! She's classy and talented. I always cite her as an example of Hollywood's hope for the future... no scandal, no BS. Just talent and elegance. Always teary-eyed to see the Memorial clips...especially as I get another year older and feel the loss more personally. Very sad to lose three Oscar winning fellas I got to know over the years: Sidney Sheldon, Red Buttons Glenn Ford.

Michael Mann's Montage

Loving these montages...especially that they've scored this last one with Saint-Saens, my favourite classical composer! Michael Mann is a brilliant director but not the most brilliant interview, at least when I sat down to chat with him! Bossy! But I guess that's what makes a great director. Part father, part choreographer. Does anyone else think we've seen a little too much of Tom Cruise in all these clip fests? I mean, what's going on? Did he help finance the broadcast? Or is he still more of a box-office powerhouse than I gave him credit for? Heck, after seeing Suri in the flesh tonight (see my first posting of the evening!), I think SHE is the future of Hollywood cinema! She's BRILLIANT!!! Gorgeous, calm and well dressed! What more do we want in today's young celebs? Britney, Lindsay, Paris, etc...TAKE NOTE!

Kate Winselt, presenting for Achievement in Film Editing--THE DEPARTED! Isn't she lovely? Why, oh why, did she make THE HOLIDAY? I agree with Christian Bale that those fluffy romantic comedies (which I find rarely either romantic OR comedic!) are only executed by celebrities who have contracts to fulfill or alimony payments to be made. Okay, okay, I know a lot of you probably LIKED that movie, but COME ON! What a waste of Kate and Jude. They could have just as easily plucked a couple castaways off of LOST.

Whaddya think...MISS SUNSHINE, DEPARTED or an upset for BEST PICTURE????????????
