Better Homes and Gardens

Have you got a burning home and garden question?
Have you got a burning home and garden question? magnify

Hello again!

It's been a long time between blog post for us, but our our new financial year resolution is to ensure that it doesn't happen again...oops.

This week, we're taking a look at a really handy Yahoo!7 product called Answers. You may have seen various questions featured on the Better Homes and Gardens homepage - they're from Answers. They represent the tip of a huge iceberg of information shared by our community of everyday experts. And you'll be pleased to know that there is a dedicated Home and Garden category, full of really handy hints and tips.

So, What is Yahoo!7 Answers?

It's the place to ask questions and get real answers from real people. It's fun and educational because you get to ask questions on any topic-from the serious to the not so serious. You can also help people out by answering others' questions. It's all about sharing-what you know and what you want to know-so don't keep those questions and answers to yourself...jump in and start sharing!

Does it cost money to join in?

Nope, that's one of the best things about Yahoo!7 Answers--it's absolutely free. All you have to do is log in to your Yahoo! account to share in the wealth of knowledge generated by the Yahoo!7 Answers community.

How do I ask a question?

It's easy. Once you've logged in, just:

  • Click on the Ask button at the top-left corner of any page.
  • Type in your question. Similar questions will appear underneath as you type, so if someone's asked the same question, you might not have to.
  • Add any details that will help people answer it.
  • Select a category for your question.
  • Decide whether you want an email sent to you whenever someone answers your question. If not, uncheck the Yes, email me answers as they are posted box.
  • Click on the Preview button. If it looks ok to you, click Submit.

Remember: the clearer your question, the more likely you'll get really good answers. Use the Details section to provide additional information and further clarify your question.

Taking the time to choose the right category will also help ensure your question is seen by the group of people most able to answer your question.

For guidelines on what types of questions are acceptable, please refer to our

How do I answer a question?

Each question has a 4-day "open" period during which you can post an answer. Just go to any question in the Open Questions section and click on the Answer this Question button to start. Enter your answer in the Your Answer field and include the URLs of any sources you want to reference in the Source(s) field.

New - Better Homes and Gardens photo sharing group!

Do have a digital camera phone and/or a digital camera, and want to find a way to share you photos with family, and friends? maybe you'd like to share photos of your craft and DIY projects, culinary creations, gardening and pets with likeminded people?

Flickr is the best way to store, sort, search and share your photos online. Flickr helps you organise that huge mass of photos you have and offers a way for you and your friends and family to tell stories about them. It's a company owned by Yahoo!, so that means you can use your Yahoo! ID to log in to the service. If you don't have a Yahoo! ID, you can get one here: www.yahoo7.com.au

A basic account is free, too! This type of account will allow you to upload 100MB worth of photos each calendar month (which means quite a lot of photos!) Your account lets you know how much space you've got whenever you log in.

Want to see what it's all about?

Have a look at the Better Homes and Gardens flickr group, where people who share a passion for food, DIY, craft, gardening and pets share photos and ideas.

How to get started

Register:

Go to flickr.com and click on the sign up button

Once you complete the login process, you will see a form like this:

Note: On this form, to protect your privacy, you might wish to change your screen name if it's currently your real name.

Upload your photos:

Click the word "You" on the flickr navigation bar at the top of the page, and then you'll see a drop-down menu. Here, click on "Upload Photos":

On this page, click on the "Browse" button to locate the photos to upload on your computer. Open up the folder where your photo is kept and then double-click on the photo to upload it. Repeat this for each photo (you can upload six per batch).

You can also make your photo private, viewable only by friends and family, or public here.

Next, you describe your image, as seen in the image below:

And that's it - you'll be an expert in no time!

A great place to ask questions, share ideas and learn how to get the most out of sharing your photos using flickr is the Better Homes and Gardens group. You can join by visiting the group once you have registered as a flickr member. You'll see a link to join in the bottom right hand corner of the page:

We hope to see you there soon!

World Environment Day - June 5
World Environment Day - June 5 magnify

June 5 is World Environment Day. Protecting water sources, tree planting, waste reduction and energy conservation are just some of the actions members of Clean Up the World will focus on as part of World Environment Day to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and protect against the impacts of climate change.

We're also doing our bit to save the world, with our "Better Planet" campaign , which started this year - together we have been saving on lighting, have changed to recycled toilet paper, left the car at home and more. Don't forget to vote in each month's poll in our "Be Involved" area of the site, so we can keep tabs on how far we've come!

Yahoo!7 is also going green, with its "Be a Better Planet" initiative, full of environmentally and wallet-friendly tips and suggestions, and even a guide to environmentally-aware entertainment and entertainers.

Don't miss the show this Friday, as Johanna will be introducing a brand new segment covering even more ways to clean and green the planet, and of course, you can find many more ways to care for our wonderful planet by trying a search on the Better Homes and Gardens site!

We'd love to hear from you! Have you changed your lifestyle recently, even in a small way, to help get the planet back on track? Just leave us a comment if you'd like to share your thoughts or experiences.

Happy World Environment Day!

Carolyn
