Greyhound Adoption Program : saving the lives of retired racing greyhounds. Giving them a chance to have a family.

September E-news!

*E-News From GAP*

September Edition 2007

Hi Everyone! Yep it’s that time again…for The GAP E-news! And this edition is full of interesting things…so grab your cuppa and the E-news, and check out what’s happening in GAP!

*Fostering is Fun!*

Foster parents/families

Thank you to those who have stepped up and offered their hearts and homes to our awesome friends. Without foster parents GAP wouldn’t be able to do the job that they do so well.

We are always still looking for new and old foster homes to help foster our beautiful greys. Wether you used to be one of our foster families and would like to foster again, a trainer/owner that is interested in helping your greyhound get to their adopted parent, or you just want to help an animal in need , then come aboard! We welcome everyone that is willing to give their hearts to these beautiful creatures, and to assist them in making it to their forever home.

The more foster families we have the more greyhounds find a loving home!

So, if you would like to be able to give a greyhound another chance at a new life then jump on the phone and give us a call! Contact GAP at 8243 7124 and ask to speak with Tom.

*Greyt Big Thank You!*

Thank you to all who sent in their greyhounds pictures for the GAP Calendar.

We have received quite a few entries this year! Poor Tom, his desk is just full of envelopes and disks with pictures of the beautiful greys to be placed into our yearly calendar. We as a committee can’t wait to be able to jump right in and start looking at all the photos! It’s going to be a very awesome calendar! I personally can’t wait to see the finished product. A BIG Thank you goes to Neil and Jacquie Todd for putting the GAP calendar together every year. You guys are just GREYT! J

Our warmest Thank you goes out to Petwares Pet Accessories Mega Store in Mt.Barker!

They helped GAP raise $761 with the sausage sizzle. And with their donation tins that they have put up in the store to also help GAP raise money. Thank you Petwares!!!

*Events*

Pet Expo

The Pet expo at Mt. Barker went exceptionally well. The weather was beautiful and the greys and their families were enjoying the day out. There were quite a few dogs there and a lot of people interested in GAP and its cause. I spoke to many families that had either adopted a greyhound or who foster for GAP. It was good to see all those greyhounds socializing with everyone. Showing people that greyhounds really do make a greyt pet!

*PPD – Princess Pretzel Diaries*

Woohoo! The PPD segment of our newsletter…Can’t wait to see what those Royal Hounds have been up to this time! J

Well hello again my friends. It has been another eventful month up here and really with our social diary filling so fast it won’t be long before it is Christmas. We really are rushed off our Royal paws but we would not have it any other way.

We were invited to the Expo at Mount Barker but it was the same weekend as Dad's nieces wedding, so things were really busy. Of course we could not say no to the Expo, Mum and Dad just had to do a bit more planning than usual. It went something like this:-

Saturday morning we went for our usual walk at 6.00am with Dad and Mum was at the hairdressers at 8.15. Mum got home and we all jumped into the Hound mobile to get to Mount Barker on time. It was wonderful. The weather was warm and we were able to wear lovely silk jackets with GAP written on them. There were so many people who were delighted to meet me in pawson and told Mum that they enjoyed my diaries. Tom Hales, Paul Marks and Paul’s son, were there cooking sausages, which we of course had to taste test to ensure quality… We met so many friends there, Eemia and Cairo, Nicky, Kofi, Klim, Maggie, and Snowy just to name a few. There were in all about 25 hounds there as well as other breeds, not as regal of course, like St Bernard’s and small little King Charles Cavaliers. There were hounds coming and going all day and the lovely people of Mount Barker just loved us all. Dad was talking to Tom later in the week and we raised the awareness of GAP and also $700.00, so that more people can have their own Hound. How wonderful that will be. Unfortunately we had to leave at about 1.00pm so that Dad could get home and do some of the fine tuning for the wedding but we are reliably informed that the day continued on until 4.00pm.

Sunday morning we were up again at 6.00am for our walk and then we were whisked down to the straight track for a wonderful off lead run. We had a ball, as it was early morning and the best time for us to have fun. Lord Jaydyn was particularly spirited and raced up and down the track at full speed. It is just wonderful to see our big wonderful boy galloping just for the fun of it. He is certainly still a very powerful lad and can still set our girlish hearts aflutter… Then it was back home for Mum and Dad to get ready and for us to have a sleep. They went off to the wedding and Aunty Judy came to give us our dinner and then the Hound sitters arrived. Well, you didn’t think we would be left outside all night did you?? Mum and Dad got home around midnight and Lady Vixen snuggled down on Mums chest and did not move for the rest of the night. She was not at all impressed with being left home. All in all it was a very busy but fabulous weekend. We have taken this weekend off from our Royal duties as we did need just a little bit more relaxation time. We went up to the park for a photo shoot for the calendar but that was as much as we can possibly do at this stage, we have some serious sleep to catch up on.

Well I must go, the couch is calling. Look after your families and don’t forget how greyt it is to be retired.

Lots of love,

Princess Pretzel, Lady Vixen and Lord Jaydyn

*Jokes and Gigglez!*

These next few gigglez were sent in by Philip: Thanks Philip!

Enjoy!

PET RULES
To be posted VERY LOW on the refrigerator door - nose height.

Dear Dogs and Cats,

The dishes with the paw prints are yours and contain your food. The
other dishes are mine and contain my food. Please note, placing a paw print in
the middle of my plate and food does not stake a claim for it becoming your
food and dish, nor do I find that aesthetically pleasing in the slightest.

The stairway was not designed by NASCAR and is not a racetrack. Beating
me to the bottom is not the object. Tripping me doesn't help because I fall
faster than you can run.
I cannot buy anything bigger than a king sized bed. I am very sorry
about this.

* Do not think I will continue sleeping on the couch to ensure your
comfort.

Dogs and cats can actually curl up in a ball when they sleep. It is not
necessary to sleep perpendicular to each other stretched out to the
fullest extent possible. I also know that sticking tails straight out and having
tongues hanging out the other end to maximize space is nothing but sarcasm.

For the last time, there is not a secret exit from the bathroom. If by
some miracle I beat you there and manage to get the door shut, it is not
necessary to claw, whine, meow, try to turn the knob or get your paw under the edge and try to pull the door open. I must exit through the same door entered.

Also, I have been using the bathroom for years -- canine or feline attendance is not required.

The proper order is kiss me, and then go smell the other dog or cat's
butt. I cannot stress this enough!

To pacify you, my dear pets, I have posted the following message on our
front
door:

To All Non-Pet Owners Who Visit & Like to Complain About Our Pets:

1. They live here. You don't.

2. If you don't want their hair on your clothes, stay off the furniture.
That's why they call it 'fur'niture.

3. I like my pets a lot better than I like most people.

4. To you, it's an animal. To me, he/she is an adopted son/daughter who
is short, hairy, walks on all fours, and doesn't speak clearly
.

Remember: Dogs and cats are better than kids because they:

1. Eat less

2. Don't ask for money all the time

3. Are easier to train

4. Normally come when called

5. Never ask to drive the car

6. Don't hang out with drug-using friends

7. Don't smoke or drink

8. Don't have to buy the latest fashions

9. Don't want to wear your clothes

10. Don't need a gazillion dollars for college, and...

11. If they get pregnant, you can sell their children.

And so that concludes our monthly newsletter for September. Hope you enjoyed it and if you have any suggestions or ideas, pictures, jokes, events etc. Please feel free to contact us! All information is below.

Letter from the Editor:

Hello everyone! Welcome once again to the Greyhound Adoption Program newsletter. We are back up and running again! GAP is in the process of reconstructing a whole new Committee and organizing things, but business continues as normal. I’m happy to say I will still be your newsletter editor and as always I am open for comments and suggestions for the news. So feel free to contact me with your thoughts!

There are going to be some changes within GAP but, as we all know change can be good! The main goal of GAP is to give the retired greyhounds a loving home and that’s what we are continuing to do. With the help and support of GRSA and its employees, The GAP community, The Committee and all that are involved in helping these wonderful dogs, finding homes for the greys will be a rewarding challenge.

So with all that being said, lets get onto the news!

Positions Available

Foster parents/families

Do you have what it takes to be a GAP foster parent/family? Do you have enough love in your heart to share with one of these beautiful dogs? Do you have just enough room for one more loyal friend?

We are in need of foster parent/families to assist with the transition from track to home. Foster families are a very important link in the chain, without them GAP wouldn’t be as successful. They are the link that holds the chain together. They receive the retired racing greyhound from the track; they show it what it is like to live inside a home, with a family, and all the day to day activities within a family environment. They help it adjust and when the time is right, they pass them onto the adoptive parents. It’s such a joy to see a greyhound go onto the next step in their new lives. Why not be a part of that?

So, if you would like to be able to give a greyhound another chance at a new life then jump on the phone and give us a call! Contact GAP at 8243 7100 and ask to speak with Tom.

Committee Members

Do you have a few hours to spare? Would you like to work with other people who share the same love for greyhounds as you do? Then the GAP Committee may be for you. GAP is looking for caring, enthusiastic, fun loving people to be a part of its group. Meetings will be every 3-4 weeks, for approximately 2 hours. At the moment the meetings are in the day, but we are looking at evening meetings so everyone has an opportunity to participate. If you think you would like to be a committee member, then contact Tom at 8243 7100. Also tell him your preference, whether you can attend a day or evening meeting.

GAP CALENDARS

The GAP Calendars are still in the making. We are looking for some awesome snaps of your greys. Particularly snaps that show the grey with a family member, cuddling, loving, and doing what we all know comes natural to a greyhound with their families. These precious moments will be a beautiful addition to the GAP Calendar this year. So get those cameras snapping and send in those photos!

There are a few guidelines though, so read carefully and follow them so your grey may get to be a star in the 2008 GAP SA Calendar!

Guidelines:

1. First off make sure all photos are very clear and crisp, especially if it may be chosen for one of the large shots.

2. Please provide an actual 6x4 print either glossy or matte with the greyhounds name and your name and address on the back. Also if sending in a cd or floppy disc please make sure the file is in JPEG format. Make sure you also place a label on the disk with greyhounds name and your name and details. Any photos or discs without this information WILL NOT be considered for the calendar.

3. Please limit your photos to a couple per greyhound.

4. If you are using a digital camera set it to the highest quality.

5. If you don’t have a camera ask your family or friends. I’m sure this will help you out. If you really get stuck contact GAP and we will see if someone can help you out.

6. All photos must be submitted to the GAP office by no later then September 14th, 2007.

7. Unfortunately we cant be responsible for returning you prints however they will be available for collection at the GAP end of year BBQ (date to be advised)

8. We will be looking at doing both formats again this year, the large calendar and the desktop calendar. So get those shutters snapping and please address them to:

PRINCESS PRETZEL DIARIES

Here we are at the PPD segment of the newsletter. Always greyt to hear from our Royal Hounds! And as always it wouldn’t be a newsletter without it! So let’s get started and see what those hounds have been up to! ....................................................................

"Hello to you all

We have been our usual busy selves up here, but my goodness it has been cold. We have been doing a little more gardening than usual just to keep warm. Lord Jaydyn spins around to loosen the dirt and to get us to chase him and then we dig a few holes to help with the landscaping before chasing and teasing Lord Jaydyn. It is a greyt game and we love it, Mum and Dad don’t seem too happy about it however, and it takes a lot of skill to put the holes in just the right places for that artistic effect.

Wasn’t GAP night fun?? We do not usually go to that night as it is a long way for us to travel in the Royal Hound mobile and then of course there is the problem of there being three of us in the carriage if Mum and Dad want to have dinner. Mum is just a little concerned that there would not be a Royal carriage left if we were left to our own devices. (She is probably quite right…) However, as it was the 10th anniversary of GAP we just could not let that special occasion go past without our Royal presence. We were introduced beautifully as the Royal Family and one lady was just delighted to meet Princess Pretzel in person. Lady Vixen enjoyed it so much, but Lord Jaydyn was just certain that he was going to race and show the others how it is done. Aunty Barb was holding him and he was so excited. Mum and Aunty Barb had to swap Vixen for Jaydyn and then he relaxed. We are still convinced that he would have come first though. Mum and Dad even had a race named after them because Dad puts the calendar together for us and that was just fantastic.

We went for a lovely walk down at Glenelg on the weekend and made friends with some more of the nice people down there. The weather was starting to get quite wild and wooly by the time we got back to the car so it was no hardship to come home and settle down by the fire.

Well my friends, enjoy yourselves and look after your families. Never forget how wonderful it is to be retired.

Lots of love,

Princess Pretzel, Lady Vixen and Lord Jaydyn"

POEM_Gate

Rainbow Bridge, always the saddest segment in the newsletter but one that I feel is helpful in the healing process. I also would like introduce an online memorial for those who wish to honor their beloved pet in another way. Greyhound Memorial Park was set up for the GAP community so they can honor their pet(s).

The only info that will be put online is what you request. No personal details except for the greyhound’s name date of birth (if you know it) and the date that they passed over. Also a picture would be nice, to show who the grey is. Your name or family name can be added so people know who the wonderful family was that adopted such a greyt pet. You may also write a little something about your pet, a poem, or anything you wish. That’s optional and totally up to you.

If you would like to be a part of Rainbow Bridge SA online then please visit http://au.360.yahoo.com/rainbow_bridge_sa . You may also contact Angela here at the newsletter or by phone on 8285 4885.

July Edition 2007

Hello everyone! Welcome once again to the Greyhound Adoption Program E-news letter. Shall we dig right in and see what’s here? Sure! Ok. Here we go……

First, we will start with a very important message from Philip, our GAP coordinator:

A victory of sorts

We have finally heard from the CDMB re the assessing of our dogs. It is a victory of sorts but comes with conditions. They have agreed to allow Trish Bennett, one of our fosterers who is doing the Delta course, to assess our dogs for a period of 12 months under the following conditions:

1. that she completes the Delta course within the 12 months of her contract,

2. She attends the Dangerous Dog course run by the RSPCA &

3. She is not a member of our committee.

They have also agreed to pay the costs involved for the 12 month period.

We also have to supply the CDMB with a list of all the dogs and owners details that we have put through the program in the past 10years up to the 1st June this year. The board will then issue a card exempting these dogs from being muzzled in public. Dogs assessed by us after 1st June this year will be required to wear a muzzle in public until we can get them assessed by Trish under the board’s new guidelines. Once this assessment is completed they will then be issued with an exemption card.

I say it is a victory of sorts because, as has happened in the past, if the board changes at anytime we could face the whole issue again and be back at square one. At the end of the 12 months they could impose a new list of conditions and demands. I believe that while we take what wins we can we now need to focus on changing the legislation that controls Greyhounds as pets. Is this possible, how do we go about it? I don’t know, but we believe it is something worth looking into. Australia is one of only a handful of countries in the world that still muzzle greyhounds! I would like to organise a group of interested people to look into this issue.

As for now, we have to sort out if Trish is willing to accept the position and agree to the conditions, exactly how she has to assess our dogs, where this will take place, when it will happen and when she can start. But it does mean that we will resume putting dogs through the program but those dogs maybe required to wear a muzzle once adopted if the assessment hasn’t been completed. Not the ideal situation but the best one we have at the moment.

I would like to thank everyone, on behalf of the committee, for their support and calls over the past few weeks. It has been a frustrating period for us all.

Philip

GAP Adoption Coordinator

Afternoon Tea

Well our Afternoon Tea was a success! We had a lot of happy, hopping, waggly-tailed greys all together ready to socialize with each other and of course they let the 2 legged humans have a good ole time too! There were approximately 35-40 dogs and their families that attended. That’s GREYT! The Raffle was very successful! We raised $185 from the sale of the tickets. GAP would like to say many Thank You’s to Don and Joan for the wonderful basket that they donated. To Wendy for organizing such an awesome Birthday Cake for GAP. And to the committee and friends for helping set up and organizing that day.

All around Thanks go to everyone for all that they have done, and to those who attended.

The day was excellent even though it was just that little bit dark. Apologies from GAP for having no lights. At least that didn’t stop everyone from having a greyt day!J

Doggy Dental

Lately we have received a few emails asking about bad breath with their greys and how to reduce it.

It is not uncommon for ex-racers to have bad teeth, partly due to the soft diet they are fed when racing. Any deep cleaning and/or removal of bad teeth are done before adoption. However after you adopt your grey it is up to you to continue with good doggy hygiene. Brushing their teeth every day is a very helpful way to combat the bad breath. You can use a soft bristle toothbrush, finger brush or a special doggy toothbrush and some doggy toothpaste, which comes in either chicken or beef flavour, and they seem to like it!

Dog chews, raw bones and dry food help maintain good dental hygiene. Bad dental health is indicated by bad breath, rotting and/or tartar covered teeth. If your dog has a considerable build-up of tartar, this needs to be removed by your veterinarian.

The Princess Pretzel Diaries

Hello to all of our friends and your families.

Hasn’t it been cold?

Lady Vixen and I had always shared a Chalet (kennel) when we were on our own, but when Lord Jaydyn arrived Dad bought a new one. He had this silly idea that we would continue to share one and Jaydyn would have the other. We soon put an end to that and we lay in the doorway of each Chalet and he was not allowed in. He is the one who really feels the cold and so we now have a third Chalet. Mum calls our backyard the Swiss village and it really does look like one.

Welcome to the Shangri-La Village for Sophisticated Hounds.

Now I don’t know about you, but getting up to go for a walk at 5.30am has got to be the craziest idea I have ever heard of. It is dark, cold and just generally not pleasant. In actual fact, I have to say that it is not entirely Dad’s fault. Lord Jaydyn and I would quite happily sleep in and arise around 8.00am if left alone, however Lady Vixen has quite different ideas and starts bouncing around the lounge room at 5.30am and will not settle back to sleep even after Mum has gotten up, let her out for a wee and then tucked her back into bed again. We have all tried to ignore her, but it is quite impossible. Oh the trials and tribulations we older and more refined hounds have to put up with.

We have been very busy with our social engagements just lately, really, a royal hound just gets run off her paws but we wouldn’t have it any other way. Wasn’t the Million Paws Walk fun? We had never done it before and we got just a little lost, we ended up coming out at the Hackney Hotel!! Dad estimates we walked around 8 km. No wonder we were pooped. We walked with our friends of course so that made it even more fun but we were very tired that night.

Dad and Mum took us down to Glenelg on a gorgeous sunny afternoon and met two lovely families who thought we were all quite wonderful. It is amazing the people who have never met a Greyhound before and how they are so amazed at how quiet and well behaved we are. Lord Jaydyn is now quite determined not to miss out on any cuddles that are being given out.

Our next outing was to Hahndorf and we were able to help Mum eat her pie and bun. I know we have to watch our figures but Mum needs all the help we can give her.

The next outing was to Semaphore to have a walk along the beach and up and down the main street. Stopping to talk to people of course and having a coffee at a lovely café.

Then we had our 10th birthday for GAP. We had cake and sang Happy Birthday and then got to talk to all of our friends and make new friends as well. It was a lovely day, quite cold of course but we had our ‘jama’s on and we were fine.

All in all it has been a busy time but a Royal Hounds work is never done. The more we go out and promote just how fantastic we hounds are the more people will want to know about our breed and the programme and that is good for every one. Especially those poor unfortunate people who have never met a Greyt Greyhound before. We can only hope that GAP will continue its wonderful work for another 10 years.

Take care all of you and remember that it is Greyt to be retired.

Lots of love,

Princess Pretzel, Lady Vixen and Lord Jaydyn xxx xxx xxx

Oops, and of course Mum and Dad xxx

PS from Princess Pretzel,

We have just heard Mum talking on the phone to Phillip. It seems that Gap will indeed have another birthday.

We just wanted to thank Phillip, Bradley and the wonderful committee we have for all of their hard work, drive, dedication and passion. It takes an enormous amount of effort to go up against a Government Department. The hours of work that they have put into this wonderful result is immeasurable.

The new hounds will have to go out with a muzzle for a little while, but that won’t be for long. Believe it or not, I too, wore a muzzle when I first came up to my new home here. It is certainly not the most regal of accessories but it did allow me to become part of a loving home where my poise and royal nature could develop properly.

Once again Phillip, Bradley and all of the committee, thank you for your drive and compassion, we would not be where we are without you.

Much love,

The Royal Hounds

Princess Pretzel, Lady Vixen and Lord Jaydyn

xxx xxx xxx

Thank You.

Rainbow Bridge

This segment of the newsletter is always a sad one, but one that must be written. For here we are remembering our friends, our loyal and loving pets that have passed over to Rainbows Bridge where they will await their human companions.

Today we would like to send our condolences to David who lost his beloved Bluey at age 14. Bluey aka Woodburn Bluey will be greatly missed by his companions and GAP. May the Angels be with you.

Princess Pretzel Diaries

Hello to all of you wonderful hounds and the fabulous families who look after you.

We have so much to tell you, but one sad thing that has happened is that our dear friend Bingo passed away. L

We flirted with him shamelessly and we loved him. He and his mum and dad had been battling a dreadful and really painful eye condition for three years and finally he was in too much pain. Good-bye our friend, we miss you Bingo, you were an honorary royal hound

Now I don’t know if you were ever aware, but Lady Vixen was always very nervous around strange dogs, of course Hounds are fine but common dogs always concerned her. Mum was worried about this and booked her into a small and rather elite (of course) training course. We all went as a family for moral support and then Dad would take Lord Jaydyn and myself for a lovely walk with a biscuit break in the centre, and then we would go back and pick up Mum and Vixen. Of course most of the people there had never met a royal Hound before and we won many hearts. Vixen loved it. She made friends with a beautiful black Labrador called Morticia and a very handsome Basset Hound called Willis. Vixen was able to cope with all sorts of dogs coming up to her and even started doing an agility course. You should have seen her go!! At one stage she was a bit frightened of the tunnel but with treats and Mum at the other end she was flying through it. She was of course, the fastest around the agility course and Mum kept up with her. We loved watching all of this and it just goes to show that Greyhounds can do anything that we set our minds to just a lot faster than any one else!!

Lord Jaydyn has been in the wars lately, he is just like one of the AFL footballers with a strained groin muscle. It finally started getting better with lots of massage and some tablets from our wonderful vet Aunty Rachel. Of course as he was feeling just a bit better I felt it was time to have a bit of a game, well he slipped, broke one of his toe nails off and cut his foot. Mum had trouble stopping the bleeding and I was in trouble for starting the game. With all of the practice Mum has had with my toenails you wouldn’t think things were too bad but she really couldn’t stop the bleeding. Back up to Aunty Rachel, so now he has two back legs that are a bit wobbly. If you ever have any cuts or scrapes our Mum uses spray on Betadine. It is just wonderful, and our Aunty Barb uses Aloe Vera and that is also great. Get your parents to put some in the medicine cabinet, just in case.

We went down to see Happy, Bingo’s friend, as we knew he was missing his mate terribly and took him for a walk. We had a great time, Happy was determined to be up the front with Lord Jaydyn and it was just wonderful to see these two big, gentle boys walking together. Boys are of course a little bit bigger than us girls but so gentle and sooky that you don’t notice their size. Mum has a really soft spot for big boys and you should see how Lord Jaydyn is with children. Talk about a gentle giant. He had never met any before he came to live with us but they all adore him.

We had a wonderful time at the Expo with all of our friends. It is terrific to be dressed up and then fussed over and patted by every one. Lord Jaydyn went one step further and he met Dr. Harry. He was on stage with him for about an hour and Dr. Harry thought he was just fantastic. He told Mum afterwards that Greyhounds are his favorite breed. We knew we loved Dr. Harry, now we are besotted with him.

Well it is now time for dinner so I had best be going. Look after yourselves and remember that being retired is just Greyt!!

Lots of love,

Princess Pretzel, Lady Vixen and Lord Jaydyn

ps Mum and Dad send their love as well. Xx xx xx

We have received a few emails in regards to our last newsletter where we were asking people to consider adopting our beautiful male greys because so many are waiting to be adopted. They wanted to share their experiences with the boys and hopefully encourage others to adopt these wonderful mates.

Here's one of the e-letters from our readers:

Bennie:

Hi,

I read the article concerning Male Greys not being adopted. Which is very disappointing!

We have our Black Male Greyhound Bennie (aka Northern Kist) for 5 years. Being a male makes no difference to us and it shouldn't to people who want to adopt a Greyhound. Bennie is an affectionate loveable dog who lives with Buddy (the Blue Heeler), Langley (the cat) and 2 rabbits (Kiff & Bonnie).

Male greys do squat to pee (most the time) and always looking for pats and interaction with their masters.

To give an idea of the nature of Bennie, he was outside this morning with the 2 rabbits that had gotten out and he had not touched them!

Bennie has completed his Basic obedience Training (Greyhounds can be taught and love the training / interaction). He is always happy to see us when we get home, I couldn't think of a better dog.

Regards

Tim, Collette & Coen

Norm-Beau=Normbo

Hi.

I thought I would send in this photo of my daughter with Amy and Norm (beau). We thought he was too hunky to be called Norm as that denotes a slob and he was more like a muscly Beau. So we compromised and call him Normbo.

He loves to sleep on the lounge (seriously not allowed) and jumps about 10ft in the air when we tell him we are going for a walk. He is also extremely affectionate.

Njoy.

Regards

Renee

Thank you to those who shared their male greyhound experience with us and the newsletter. Its such a help to have families that are willing to promote the adoption of the male greys, as they are just as loving and affectionate as their female counterparts, and aren’t really any different to them. Just maybe a little bit more sooky! J

We would also like to thank the families that have taken the time to send in pictures of their wonderful 4legged friends. It’s a greyt joy to read just how much everyone loves their greyhounds. whether it be male or female. They really are our best friends J

I hope you enjoyed just a few of the e-letters received. Stay tuned for next months editions of E-letters to GAP!

If anyone has a story or picture they would like to share with GAP and the Newsletter readers. Feel free to send them in. We will do our best to put each one in a newsletter.

Have you ever wondered whether or not your greyhound is at his/her ideal weight? Do you know what the correct weight is for a greyhound? Well if you have been struggling with this question, then Shirley has the answer for you!

WHAT WEIGHT SHOULD MY GREYHOUND BE?

Hi everyone, I thought I would send this in to Angela for the newsletter as one of the most common questions I still get asked is “ What weight is your greyhound” or “ How heavy should my greyhound be”. Seeing as I have a gap greyhound and a racing greyhound I though this might help those new owners that aren’t sure how heavy their new pet should be. Smokey is my retired greyhound and he is 9 years old. He is still very active and loves a run when I get the chance to take him somewhere for a run but he has regular walks to keep him happy and me fit (ha ha) When he raced he raced at around 30.5 to 31 kilos. His weight now is 32.5 to 33 kilos. It took me a while when I first adopted him nearly 5 years ago to maintain his weight at a healthy level. At first with treats from me and then treats from the kids he went up to 35 kilos and on some greyhounds that would not be a problem but I could no longer see that shadow of his last few ribs which meant that he was over weight. Smokey’s evening meal consists of approx 500g of meat or chicken necks plus 1 cup of dry food. Some dogs have more dry food than that but Smokey will put weight on very quickly if I give him too much kibble. Remember these dogs are hounds and like all hounds such as the Afghan, Saluki and even the Rhodesian Ridgeback they are meant to be slender. A fat hound is not a healthy hound. By all means give them treats etc but then adjust their evening meal accordingly. If need be reduce their kibble by ½ to 1 cup. It is always preferable to reduce the dry not the meat content and of course always make sure your dog has fresh clean water to drink.

With Cassie my racing girl she is on a racing diet. She gets good quality beef and a high quality kibble plus added calcium, vitamins etc. She races at a weight of 27.5 kilos and when she retires she will more than likely go up to 28 kilos but much more than that would put her over weight. Of course each dog is an individual there weight should be taken accordingly. The best thing to do when you receive your newly adopted family member is to check their vaccination card to see if their weight was written down. If not you could probably ring the vet nurses at Chris Arnolds and find out what weight they were when they went to be de sexed. Also in winter remember to rug your greyhound. By trying to keep warm they will use energy which causes them to lose weight. This will give you a starting point and then you can go from there. If I am able to help in any way as I may know the trainer your greyhound came from. I can also find out what their racing weight was (if they raced of course) and let you know. You can contact me through the Gap website at www.gapsa.org.au I hope this has been of some help to you.

Kindest Regards Shirley Johnson

This next segment of the newsletter is dedicated to all the greyhounds that have passed over to what I know of as, Rainbow Bridge.

I have learned recently of a few greys that have passed over, and that was just heartbreaking. Even tho I, personally, do not know them, I still have a place for all of them in my heart, as does everyone else that owns a greyhound whether it be racing or retired. So to all the adopted families/parents/owners out there that have lost their greyhound, or any beloved pet. This is dedicated to you and your beloved best friend:

Rainbow Bridge

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....
